Background

Though I spent the first eleven year of my life on Paquin, all my memories are of the more recent kind. Back then, I was young and naive and to me it was a place of amazing vivid colors, flashing lights, and blaring sounds. None of it made much sense to my young ears. I've been back there quite often since, but the scenery looks much different, me being older and wiser. It still has vivid colors, flashing lights, and blaring sounds, but I see more and smell more. It ain't so amazing no more.

They say the city I grew up in was and still is a might bit like Las Vegas from Earth-that-was, with the gambling, and the drinking, and by extension the entertainment. My family was in the entertainment business. Our Pa managed to scrap enough of a living together that we afforded our own house. It being in the middle of one of the grittiest cities on Paquin didn't matter much. My Ma always said, a home is a home and that's all that matters. We survived well enough until rumors of war came trickling in. Things happened and I found myself aboard a boat along with my ma and brother. It headed out to Regina, a backwater planet on the Rim.

Our father went off to fight in the war. We all took our turn writing letters to him though we never knew if he got them. Surely though we did receive a few letters back, and they was the highlight of our Ma's life. All in all, they was rare occasions. Our Ma opened up an entertainment hall to which the residents of our small Regina town was most grateful. As I said, Regina was a backwater planet. They didn't have too many kinds of entertainment like on Paquin. My Ma did quite well with the business and so we were able to live quite comfortable like.

My brother, being the city folk that he grew up to be didn't take well to being carted off to a no man's land joo fuen chse. He was sixteen at the time we left. And for a sixteen year old, that's near a lifetime. Me, I didn't mind too much. I was only eleven and didn't have such prejudices.

Despite our hardships, that was according to Ken, he managed to make fast friends with most of the town residents. Afterall, Ken was quite a charmer. Of particular note was the town doctor's son, the shwie, Jack Johnson. "Heat" as we all called him for this bright red hair, was the sweetest boy I ever met. To my happiness, he and Ken became best of friends. I suppose you could say I had quite a crush on Heat. I used to pretend a sickness or two to catch a glimpse of him working with his father. And that was mighty difficult considering I'd never been sick a day in my life.

Life went on and then Ken turned eighteen. He decided it were his turn to do his duty and enlist in the war. It broke our Ma's heart, her boy becoming a Jone Yee like her husband. She never did say word one about it. I suppose that sadness left her immune system frail as it were that time when she started coming down with sickness. As his best friend, I guess Heat felt responsible and joined up with my brother. I felt a might bit sad and yet relieved someone I trusted would be by his side.

With war so unpredictable, Ma decided it was time I learned to defend myself. You see, my ma's family was steadfast attached to tradition and the art of sword and fist fell into that tradition. Now, I know, I'd be safer learnin the way of the gun, but that ain't so much a tradition as a necessity. Even sick as she was, my ma rode me hard. She taught me the ancient ways the way it were supposed to be taught. With early mornings, long practices and great attention to complete self discipline. I worked hard and learned fast. It was the least I could do. How W'rin bu Lai, Whai W'rin Bu Jwo and I weren't about to give her one more disappointment. She tried to temper the killing arts with solid Buddhist beliefs but it weren't until years later that I finally understood what she meant.

About a year before the war ended, Ken wrote ma and me. He had been flyin' on a ship, the Mao's Claw, which were transporting goods to the front line. It seemed there were some battling even on the ship and the captain he were under, got himself a big hole in his chest. Being the next highest rank in the crew, Ken got himself promoted to Captain.

Now, I don't know much about war, but after three years being enlisted, Ken came home a changed man. He flew the Mao's Claw into Victoria Falls' port and went straight to Ma. They talked in Ma's private room for what seemed like hours. When Ken left, he didn't look too shiny. I tried to talk to him but when he looked at me, it made me stop. That spark I'd known in his eyes that were there before he went to war had gone left him. I saw nothing but emptiness. That's when he left. I learned later that Heat had decided to stay with Ken.

To top it off, our Pa never returned and Ma came down with Bowden's Malady. I kept myself out of the house and out of the way. There were nothin' but sadness at home. I spent the year watching Ma's health slide. Sure, there was medicine for the Bowden's Malady, but that medicine wasn't always available as much as it should've been. It were Buh Goh. Being a short time after the war, things were still unstable. Then again, I never could remember a time when they was stable.

A year after the end of the war, Ma died. Even though I'd been expecting it, I wasn't prepared. I mourned her death for a long time. In some ways, I still do. Upon her death, I inherited the entertainment hall, and everything within it. I sold it to first man who wanted it, took my ma's sword which hung over the mantel of the fireplace, and sent word to any family I knew, including my brother. Heat's father, Doc Johnson, offered me a place to stay. For all his gruff nature he had a bit of a soft side. I stayed with him, helping to tend to the sick until my Uncle Bi Rui sent what he called an entourage to retrieve me. They was some fancy suits in a fancy ship with fancy guns. Doc Johnson warned I shouldn't go with them but in the end, I didn't have no choice. Them guns were mighty convincing and I didn't care to see Doc Johnson or anyone else get hurt on the account of me. I spent the next year back in Paquin under my Uncle's care. Here I learned where my Ma got her pokering face. Unce Bi Rui were even harder to read than my ma. I met a few cousins I didn't know I had and they too had that same pokering face. I guess it does run in the family as my own pokering face ain't none too bad. Even though, Uncle Bi Rui were kind to me, and I knew he cared even if he never done showed it in his face.

Most of the people I knew and spent time with were my Uncle's family or family of my Uncle's associates. I did however happen upon Little Bobby, a boy I vaguely knew when I were going to school on Paquin. I remembered he had a brother named Joe and they used to get in all sorts of trouble. Through coincidence, I ran into him one day and we went out for coffee, rehashing old times; or at least what old times I could remember. We kept in sort of contact as they was not in my Uncle's circle. I could talk to them when I needed to get away.

Now on Paquin, things ain't so rosy and especially for my Uncle and his kind. It so happens that I had the luck to gain enemies even when I didn't deserve them. That, of course, was aside from the normal Tong enemies that we all have. One day, I were making my way back home after a bit of shopping when this man tried to run past me. The chwen ended up knocking me over. My bags went flying and so did the package in his hand. As I turned to get up and retrieve my bags, I heard the man gasp and the words Tong filth escaped his mouth. I was instantly on guard and so was full expecting the gun that he pulled. Well, my ma didn't teach me the fighting arts to just let someone walk all over me, so I defended myself. You see, tah bie woo lohn. He was too close to me when he pulled his gun. If he were a might bit farther away, I would've been killed if I had tried what I did. Instead, I prevailed and knocked the gun out of his hand, sending him to the land of dreams. Then I gathered my things and went my way before any authorities happened by. Now this man took a disliking to my interference in whatever it was he were doing and has made it his personal goal to make my life miserable. Most think having an enemy is a symbol that I'm doing something right. I'd think so too except I weren't doing nothing. Even so, I've managed to keep him at bay, however, whenever I think I've gotten rid of him, he pops up and tries to kill me or just plain ruin my otherwise happy day.

On my eighteenth birthday I received an unexpected surprise. Dressed in some fancy suit and a smile that sparkled into his eyes, my brother stood at the door to my room. He had a present for me, a locket. Inside were a picture of my ma, my pa, Ken and myself all smiling and happy like. I must have only been five year in that picture. He said when he got back from the war, he were messed in the brain pan. He knew he couldn't go back to Victoria Falls, but he knew he had to tell ma why he couldn't come back. When he'd done spoken to her, she gave him the locket and told him it were to help him remember who his family were. It took him all this time, but he'd finally remembered and were coming to pick up what were left of his family and take 'em to his new family. I being the only one left, he were there to take me with him. I should have been mad at him, afterall, he left and never did return the messages I sent to him after Ma's death. Instead, I couldn't turn him away. He were my brother and I missed him right so. I was ever so happy to see he'd found the spark in his eyes.

As I've hinted, I'm quite like my mother and her side of the family. My brother, however, he's more like my pa. And when Uncle Bi Rui found out that Ken wanted to take his niece's only daughter out into the black, he were right mad. Well, he didn't show it but I knew he were. You see, I'd come to learn that Uncle Bi Rui weren't too fond of my pa and had opposed the marriage to my ma. Ken were too much like my pa and that didn't settle well with our Uncle. Still, there weren't much my Uncle could do. I was old enough to make my own decisions and if anything he respected my right to make my own way.

So, Ken swept me under his wing, like the ghuh I'd always known. He welcomed me to his new family and we never did look back.

And by family, Ken meant the crew of the Mao's Claw. Aside from Heat, Ken managed to hire along three new crew members. Of them all, the most collected man I'd ever seen was Celio. He piloted the Mao's Claw and taught me everything I knew about flying. Agatha, the only other female on the boat, was the toughest woman I'd ever seen. She tried to teach me to box once, but our styles of fighting weren't similar enough. What she did tell me about her past was she was some kind of up and coming sports star until some bad event went and scandalized her life. I could tell she fawned after Ken though I don't think he ever noticed. I loved my brother, but he was still a man with man's intuition. The last member was David. He never talked about his past and I only asked once. I suppose some people just ain't up to talking about themselves. Even so, David kept the Mao's Claw running smooth and never refused my inquiries on the workings of the ship.

I enjoyed life on the Mao's Claw for two years. They all became my new family. At times it was a dysfunctional family, but a family nonetheless. With no official role on the ship, I watched, aided, and learned. I even made mistakes. Remember I told you my Ma tried to instill the Buddhist way of thinking alongside my learnings of the lethal arts? Well, it took the killing of a man to show me why. His death haunted my dreams for a long time. If it weren't for Heat and his administrations to my fragile soul, I don't know if I'd be the person I am today. You see, Heat was a devout Buddhist with faith that nothing could crack. He helped me understand all those teachings my own Ma tried to tell me. Though not nearly as faithful to the Buddhist way as Heat, I attribute many of my own beliefs today to him. I never throw the first punch and when I have to, I make sure it's quick, clean and with the least amount of force possible.

Our last mission was one which we were to stole some antimatter. I don't know much about the stuff, except it's mighty unstable. Something happened during the extraction and the cannister that held the stuff was damaged. David had to constant recalibrate the settings on the cannister in order that we wouldn't be exploding ourselves up. We brought the Antimatter back to Whitehall. On Whitehall, Ken tasked me with getting fresh supplies. When I returned, the Mao's Claw was a flaming ball of fire.

For not the first time, my family was taken away from me.

As it so happened, I knew someone on Whitehall. And thank all that there was in the black that I did. Except for the few credits in my pocket, the foodstuffs in my bag, the locket around my neck, and my ma's sword, I didn't have much else. I didn't feel right about going back to Paquin and to my Uncle who'd sure feel vindicated about not wanting me to go off with Ken. Though he might not say it, I knew he would think it and I couldn't bear to be with someone who had such bad feelings for my brother. This woman were a friend of David Glass. According to David there was exactly three people he would trust who could fly a ship like no other. Celio, some guy wearing lots of hawaiian shirts and Zari Sillah. I met Zari once when Celio got himself too sick to fly. She hired on temporary and sure enough she rivaled Celio's damn good pilot skills. Zari hooked me up with a solid crew and a way to contact her in case I needed anything before taking off again. There I started out as the quartermaster and sure as pie is good became first mate.

I kept the same mail stop that my ghuh used. Right after the Mao's Claw exploded, I found a bit of mail that surprised me to no end. It were left for my brother and it were a picture of my pa. He sat in a bar having a drink like nothing were wrong. On the back were three words. “He ain't dead” I investigated when I could but by the time I found the bar he drank at, no one recognized my pa in the picture. Every once in awhile I've had some clue or another but by the time I can figure where to ask next, he ain't nowhere to be seen. If I believed in ghosts, which I ain't saying I'm not, I'd say my pa were leading me all over the 'verse for some reason I ain't figured yet.

I did write my Uncle and went to see him. He of course offered me a place and job working for him. I respectfully thanked him for his kindness but said I had gotten a liking to being out in the black and that I had notions of one day owning my own ship. My Uncle said he wished me well and told me if I ever wanted to reconsider there'd always be a place here on Paquin.

I started saving my credits and scouting around for possible recruits when I got the money I needed. I met a few Pilots, though I kept my eye on Zari, writing her as such in case she got an itch to join me. I also found a few doctors who weren't too happy where they were and scouted a few possible mechanics and some regular brutes as it seemed there were always a need for the brute type out in the black.

As it so happens, I met one of my possible recruits after a run-in with my ever faithful enemy. Apparently I wasn't paying to much attention to my surroundings as during a bit of shore leave on a backwater planet, he hired a bunch of men to ambush me, pull me into an ally and beat me senseless. I don't know how he managed it from so far away from Paquin. The man must have a bigger grudge than I'd expect from a simple knock on the head. He also seemed to want me to know who it was as before I passed out, they said as such. Anyway, I was able to defend myself at first but being surprised and outnumbered, they overwhelmed me. I'm pretty sure I would've died and am not sure why I didn't. As it were, I woke up to the most hideous face I'd ever seen in my life. If I'd had the breath to speak I might've screamed. Still, he weren't the one attacking me so I supposed that he were ok. He took me somewhere and tended to my wounds. Now I'm one of those people whose body just knows how to heal. Even so, I couldn't believe the miracles this man worked. He surely is as gifted with the medicines as his face is ugly. The man never did say word one and I eventually came to find out he weren't able to talk. He had a datapad he carried around and wrote stuff on it. It seemed he also knew how to speak with his hands and showed me how to sign a few words. When I was able, he helped me back to my ship and before he left, I asked him if he were interested in being hired as a Dr when I got my own ship. He agreed I should look him up when the time came. In case I ended up hiring this Dr, I took some time to learn a little bit of hand talking. Afterall, it's only proper to be able to speak to someone as they speak to you. That and not having to speak to say something may come in awful handy.

Unfortunately, I spent two year saving up for a bai lih mohn and I couldn't manage a single credit towards getting one. It seemed having the necessities of life got in the way too many times.

Recently, Uncle Bi Rui made me an offer I couldn't refuse. He'd give me a ship and in return I'd do some errands for him as he needed. He'd pay me for the jobs of course but at a huge discount. Seeing as I was not going to get a ship anytime soon, I took him up on his offer. I suppose I should be upset about being under my uncle's thumb but I figure things could be worse. While I was waiting to go get the ship, I happened upon Little Bobby. Seems he got into some sort of trouble and he were looking to get away. I weren't sure about his skills working with a ship, but I knew he did some pretty good mechanic like work and he learned fast. I offered him a job on my new ship and he accepted. He might not be the best but I'd rather have someone I were friends with than someone I weren't.

I sent a few messages out to see if I could grab a pilot, a doctor, and perhaps a brute type person. I'm not sure who'll still be available to work for me. I guess I'll find out when I get to the ship.

Crew / Family / Contacts / Other People

Crew

Jason Vann – He's a doctor who's as good as he's ugly. He saved my life without no expectations of rewards which is mighty rare out in the black. I brought him on as one of the first members of my new crew. Other then the doctoring, I'm not entirely sure what to do with him. I'm not used to people willing to follow orders without at least some sort of argument. Makes it difficult to know what he's a thinking. Still, when he found out I don't care for killing if there's a better solution, he foregoed using his gun and fought a man hand to hand risking his life in order not to kill. I'm not sure if I should feel flattered or horrified. He nearly got himself killed which ain't good practice. An unconscious doctor ain't a very good doctor.

Zari Sillah – She's one hell of a pilot. David, back on the Mao's claw, told me once that there were three people he'd trust piloting a ship. Celio, some guy sporting hawaiian t-shirts, and Zari Sillah. I got a chance to see her in action while I were still aboard the Mao's Claw and I got the honors of seeing her skills as a member of my crew. If it weren't for her, I think I'd be living back on Paquin, working for my Uncle after my ghuh died.

Claus Hoffman – He's slick when it comes to dealing with computers and he ain't half bad fixing up a ship. I knew him when we were both too young to know the full horrors adulthood had in store for us. I then had a chance to become friends with him when I went to live with my Uncle many years later. It seems Claus, or C as we call him aboard the ship, ran into some trouble and has been given strong reason to keep on the move. I don't know if I felt sorry for his predicament or I felt obligated to help out a friend, but I asked him to come along when I left to pick up my new ship. So far he's proven most valuable if a little twitchy at times.

Family

Hiroko Tagahashi - Uncle - Brother of Ying Jun Ling
Yumi, Mako, and Tiger Tagahashi – Originally the Crew of the Jolly Roger . They done gone boarded my ship pretending to be me and my crew. They tore out a piece of the ship's wall and stole a power regulator. I found out later, they're a brother, brother, sister group that travels on a ship called the Jolly Roger. Yumi was able to successfully pose as me which seems too coincidental to be an accident. I got wrote up a bit of a genealogy tree I found on their ship and though I haven't translated it all, I believe there is a good chance they are from my pa's side of the family. If that is the case, I hope Yumi could forgive a bit of squabbling between family and the hole my doctor shooted in her kneecap. Asking around, I found out they're on a level most of us travel, living job to job, scrounging what we can, and hoping for the best. Additionally, Yumi has performed at martial arts tournaments and the brothers are rumored to be able to bend metal with their bare hands. I don't think those rumors are too far off as I got to tussle with one of the brothers and he were better than myself. Later, I come to confirm that they are cousins. Our father's were brothers.
Ying Jun Ling - Father - Originally known as Moa Takahashi, he was thought to have died during the war. Nadie received a picture of him after the death of her brother saying "He Ain't Dead".
Lisa Ling - Mother - She owned an entertainment hall on Regina. She died of Bowden's Malady.
Kenneth Ling - Brother - He owned the Mao's Claw and took Nadie with her when she turned 18.
Bi Rui - Great Uncle - He is a prominent member of the Tong. He loves his niece but doesn't show it in the same way a loving uncle might.

Contacts

Captain Jack - (as explained by someone who knows both Nadie and Jack) If there were a better example of opposites attract, then it was Nadie and Jack. He's of the purely passionate type. He's likely to express hisself on the outside whereas Nadie is anything but. They met early on when Nadie was barely an adult and first learning the ropes on the Mao's Claw. Even back then Jack was a Captain. [He's probably somewhere in his early to mid 30's now]. When he met Nadie, he hit on her and Ken decked him for it. Of course back then, it were obvious Nadie had eyes only for Heat. After the explosion of the Mao's Claw, Nadie happened to meet up with him Jack. He did her some favors and she did him a few favors in return. Over the years, they became friends and even occasional lovers, but with Nadie's desire to be a Captain and Jack actually being a Captain of his own ship, they never did have much room for anything more than a passing relationship. Still, whenever they're in the same port, Nadie makes a point of saying hi.

Barbie Huang - Owner of the bookstore “Dandies and Lions” on Dandelion Station. The store is a member of the Spacer Loan Library where members join by donating books to the library and then they can trade for books at any participating bookstore. I met Barbie the first time the Mao's Claw docked for a mailstop. She turned me onto reading books to pass the time during the long trips between planets. Barbie most honestly loves what she does and if she finds a lead on a rare or interesting book, she'll send out a beacon to those she calls friends to retrieve the book.

Star Jensen - She were the captain of the ship called the Strange Soul. Her primary work is smuggling of any kind as long as it's profitable. I had the honor of working with her after Ken's death. She's good at what she does and has a plethora of knowledge about the verse and the official and unofficial trade routes. Even after I left her ship, I've kept in contact.

Timothy Brannigan - A hired brute on the Strange Soul, this is a man who loves his drink. Accoding to his credo: A good froth and a shiny gun and he could be the happiest drunk carrying a gun. Despite the drunken liveliehood, he's one hell of a shot and if extra hands are needed and those hands were needed to watch someone's back, he's the man for the job.

Kim Young - She's the pilot of the Strange Soul and a very talkative woman. She seemed to think that if the room became silent, something bad would happen.

Ren (short for Lawrence) Gibbons - Fantastic engineer. Kept the strange soul running even in less than favorable conditions. I got along best with Ren as he was the calmest of the crew.

Other People

Maurice – Some sort of pirate who flew an Osprey class ship called the Gold Monkey. If legend is to be believed, his crew mutinied on him and then disappeared into the black, never to be seen again. I'm a wondering if my ship might not be the Gold Monkey. I'm also a wondering if the piece of wall with holes in it that the Tagahashi Siblings stole off my ship ain't a starmap leading to some treasure. Afterall, what good is a pirate story without a proper pirate's map with the X that leads to buried treasure.

Ike – Runs Ike's Junkyard on Beylix. It's the place where I did picked up my ship. Ike was a grumpy old man who seemed to know Uncle Birui more personally than I expected. He called my Uncle Spanky, which in and of itself made Ike the most brave man I ever met.

Dr. Antonio Chen – Cheap don't do justice to this man. He didn't have no respect for his calling as a doctor. Nadie's crew got a book which documented all the dealings he had done with the Syndicate. They passed the book over to the Browncoats. I don't believe he'll be doing doctoring work on Beylix much longer, assuming he survives the wrath of the Syndicate.

Pearl Fletcher – Works for the Browncoat. Nadie's crew was hired to rescue her from the Syndicate and take her off Beylix.

Maxwell Poe – Our contact for the Browncoats, he hired Nadie's crew to rescue Pearl Fletcher.

Physical Appearance

Currently, Nadie wears her hair slightly longer than jaw length though she'll oftentimes let it grow longer for a bit. She don't have much in the way of clothes, mostly ones that are for working though she has taken to wearing her brother's coat and her mother's sword along with a pair of fingerless gloves.

Psychological Profile

Nadie is a well put together individual. She knows who she is and where she's going and no one is going to get in her way. She aspires to be like her brother, a charming young man who always knew what to say and when to say it.

ASSETS
Friends in Low Places d4: Her brother knew many people and by association she knows them too.
Healthy as a Horse d6: She has an amazing immune system. She's never been sick a day in her life. Plot points spent on such rolls count as if two plot points had been spent.
Leadership d4: Her brother taught her to be a leader, to be someone others could look up to and follow.
Steady Calm d4: Very little shakes her. She's seen too much in so short a time to really be phased. She pulls her strength from her family, the one she was born into and the one she made. +2 step bonus to Willpower to avoid being shaken, frightened, or startled.

COMPLICATIONS
Credo d4: She isn't partial to killing. If Heat taught her anything it was to never throw the first punch and if she has to, make sure it's quick, clean and with the least amount of force possible.
Loyal d4: "Above all else, be loyal to your crew." That's what her brother said and she's sticking to it.
Memorable d4: There's just something noticeable about a young woman carrying an old sword and wearing a browncoat she's too young to wear. Of course, there's always that calm she's got about her that just ain't found in any kid her age. And she's the captain of a ship!
Deadly Enemy d4: Someone from the syndicate seems out to get her. She'd like to take credit for the vengeance within him but she thinks maybe she happened in the wrong place at the wrong time as his vengeful streak makes no sense.
Things Don't Go Smooth d6: She has the same bad luck as her brother. Whenever a perfect plan is in play, there's always something that sends it awry
