Belinda Mai loved tinkering and she loved the old movie serials. Fiercely independent, she created real versions of inventions that were only special effects in the movie. When Kaija came ashore in her home city, Belinda put on her inventions and helped drive it back into the sea. After the war, Belinda found many of her inventions would no longer work. She grew depressed and, in 1952, committed suicide.
