NadieScene1Solitude
From Heroes of the Great Tree
Empty. No crates. No Tools. No People. Nothing. Nadie stood in the center, eyes closed, listening to the echoes of air moving out of the vents and into the cargo bay. Chills crept down her back urging her to hug her arms together in order to find some sort of comfort. She ignored the feeling.
She strained her ears, for the familiar sounds the ship made. Some of the sounds were there, but others, were missing. Where are you Ghuh Ghuh?
The others had dispersed, going their separate ways; each one doing what was needed of them. So far, they all continued to follow her. Of course, none of them were on the ship, being as not much was left in it. She wondered if anyone would decide not to come back.
If she didn't find a job soon, they'd likely not come back at all. Even Del would be hard pressed to return. Nadie Shivered at that thought. The emptiness around her thickened, squeezing at her heart.
She raised her arms over her head, bringing her hands together. Slowly she brought them down, settling her hands in prayer in front of her chest. With eyes still closed, she moved into simple forms down the length of the emptiness. Kick, strike, sweep, kick, block, kick, strike, step: she performed fluid motions, paying attention to the sound she made in the all too quiet space. She had a good judge of distance and knew when she reached the wall before her hands had pressed up against the cold, hard, metal.
She pressed her ear to the wall, straining again to hear what she could. It pulsed with the lifeblood of the boat and comforted her some. Ghuh Ghuh, How did you keep her going all this time?
She stood like this for some time, listening to the Mao's Claw, imagining Ken's strong voice or Heat's laughter, but the sounds degenerated to the last conversation she'd overheard. She'd convinced Heat to keep his handset on, so she could hear what was going on in the icehouse. She'd been positioned outside in case of trouble, but it was inside where the trouble was.
"I got a bad feeling about this."..."The only witnesses, I can't let you leave."..."Agatha, take the leader, Heat, take the left, I'll take the right,"..."C'Mon man, pull yourself together"... "Ta ma duh"
The explosion suddenly recreated, rang in her ears as the airlock door opened.
"Captain?" Del strode into the cargo bay, the sound of her movement filling the emptiness.
Nadie straightened up and moved away from the wall. "Del."
Del's eyes moved from the wall to Nadie and her smile widened. As a mechanic, she jumped to the only conclusion possible. "You hear her too? I've been talking to her some time now. She's got good character."
Nadie nodded looking around at the emptiness. "She's missing something."
"Don't worry, Captain." she said, in normal cheery Del mode. "We'll fix her up nice and shiny."
Nadie couldn't lose herself in that cheeriness with the memory still too close to her thoughts. "We need a job first."
Del didn't respond at first. She walked past Nadie towards the crew quarters humming the Fruity Oaty Bars commercial. She turned around just before she entered the crew quarters.
"I trust you Captain. You'll find us a job."
She watched Del disappear out of sight. That woman remained an everlasting mystery to Nadie. She just hoped Del's optimism proved well placed.
