Background
Orphaned at a young age, Zari Sillah grew up on the streets of the poor side of Persephone. She made her way while she was young by staying out of the way of the law and picking pockets for money, or food from street vendors.
When she was around twelve – she thinks – , a rather fumble-handed attempted to steal a hover bike ended in an unusual arrangement, when the owner discovered that she could drive better than anyone he knew. Zari agreed to race for him, he agreed to give her a small – very small – amount of the profits.
When she was seventeen, she was discovered and recruited by Thomas, an officer of the Alliance fleet, who saw great potential in her piloting abilities. He mentored her to a stellar piloting career in the Alliance military, and along the way, the pair became lovers.
Assigned the task of piloting a cache of medicine and supplies out to the war front, Zari was overcome by greed. She betrayed Thomas for a shit-load of cash by informing pirates of their cargo, and then sabotaging the ship itself. As the captain of the ship, Thomas was blamed and demoted. He spent the next year and a half uncovering her treachery. When he finally put all the pieces together, he confronted Zari. She panicked, knocking Thomas out, then ran like hell, deserting the Alliance.
From that point on, she jumped from crew to crew, staying away from Alliance planets and simply attempting to make as much money as she could. Several years after the confrontation with her lover, she was pilot of the Jack of Diamonds, and planned to betray another crew. During the scuffle, the captain and crew saved her life, despite (as she found out later) knowing what Zari’d had planned.
That was a changing point for her. She vowed to never again betray any crew she worked with. Unless they betrayed her first, of course.
She stayed with the Jack of Diamonds for several years, until the ship was destroyed and the captain killed. Zari escaped with nothing but her life and a beat up jack of diamonds card that the captain had carried around with him as a good luck token. Zari cut out a corner of the card, showing the J and a diamond, and had it mounted in copper as a pendant that she wears on a black cord around her neck. She never takes it off.
Since then Zari has drifted from crew to crew, taking on the odd piloting job here and there. She has yet to find another crew she feels comfortable enough with to stay on long term.
Physical Appearance
Zari is tall and slender. She is pretty, with her dark skin and long hair that she tends to keep pulled back in multitudes of tiny braids.
Psychological Profile
Zari is very secretive. She tends not to talk about herself unless she has no choice. Growing up poor has left her with a deep need to always have money, and to always be on the lookout for ways to gain more. She will, however, never betray the people she is working with, though at times it might be a hard decision to make.

- Ms. Dubois - An older woman who is a fence on Athens. Zari met her a couple of months after she left the Alliance, while attempting to offload stolen goods. She likes tea.
- David Chien - Will forge just about anything, if enough money is involved. Once an officer in the Independent military, he turned to forging identities for those Browncoats who needed to avoid the Alliance after the war. Zari never did tell him she hadn't been part of the Independents.
